Well, Mr. Voight told us to blog about things that intersted us or things that came up in our lives, so i thought that i would tell you all about something that dosen't affect me, but one of my best friends. I'm not sure how many of you know this, but Megan Johnston has a thing called JRA or Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. While many people talk about arthritis a general term, there are actually over 100 forms of it. Rheumatoid Arthritis attacks the lining of the joints causing swelling and pain. It is caused when white blood cells move from your bloodstream to surrounding the joints and the lining surrounding them. It seems that the blood cells cause the linig to become inflamed. JRA is the same thing, except it affects children and adolescents, typically between the ages of 6 months to 16 years. There are three types of JRA: Polyarticular (the kind Megan has), which affects 5 or more joints, Pauciarticular JRA, which affects four or fewer joints, and the third is Systemic, which affects the whole body, including organs. Doctors dont know what causes this, but juvenile arthritis affects almost 300,000 children in the U.S. and it will stay with them the rest of their lives. For many people this disease and the constant pain that goes with it can cause every day activities like opening a jar to be nearly impossible. Many of us would give up if we were faced with such a situation, or i think that i would at least, which makes it so amazing that megan stays so active, as you probably know, being a very competitive runner and although her technique is pretty awful she manages to have fun and continue getting much much better at skiing even in the bitter cold which makes joints hurt worse than usual. So if you want to help theres a few things you could do. For instance you could donate to her JAM team! You can talk to megan or megans mom, maureen. She also appreciates apples, oranges, grapes, blackberries, strawberries, mangoes and sometiems carrots.

are you sure megan would be ok about you telling other people that she has this thing? just saying.
yeah, she knew about it. it was her who included the ancedote about the fruits she liked.
I knew that megan had it but I had no idea how many others had it! That is soo sad.
I never realized that there were so many variations af arthritis, i honestly thought that there was only one type
This is Maureen, Megan's mom. Amy you did a great job describing what JRA is and how it affects the body. I think it is important to add that this disease affects each person who has it differently. Some people who are not treated aggressively with medication can have joint damage which makes it an even more painful stiuation. Some kids end up in wheelchairs because it hurts so much to walk. Some kids end up losing thier eye sight because of JRA. This walk (JAM) that you and Megan are doing helps raise money for research. They have made so many advances in medications in the last few years. The new medicine that Megan will be starting soon was just approved for use in JRA in the last year or so. Without these medications life would be really hard for these kids. Thanks for advertising her JAM page! If people just want to be part of a really fun event they can go to her JAM page at www.kintera.org and search her name and sign up to be a part of her team. You do NOT have to raise any money!! You can just sign up and come to the MOA on March 8th and walk around the mall before it opens to the public! The last thing I want to say is Megan is so lucky to have you for a friend. You have been there for the good days and the bad days. You have volunteered to come to the JRA support groups with her, you have signed up to be on her team for the walk, you have been there to cheer her on, to keep her moving when times are tough. You are an awesome friend and I am so glad that you are a part of our lives!
I never realized that their were so many different kinds of Arthritis. I always thought that their was one kind and that was it. That is so sad that so many people have it.
